The Perfect Mess - An Eton Mess
30.7.16What's red, white and absolutely delicious?
Well, you guessed it (and the title of the blog post did give it away) - this Eton Mess!
Everybody knows that I love all things British, and this desert is no exception! It was originally served at Eton College’s annual cricket match against the pupils of Harrow School. I don’t know about you, but the thought of eating dessert where Prince William and Eddie Redmayne (just to name a few of my favourites) went to high school doesn’t seem so bad…
A girl can dream, a girl can dream.
Surprisingly very simple to make, this dessert is a perfect combination of fluffy cream, crunchy meringue and juicy strawberry.
So here is what you will need:
-1 pack of store-bought, pre-made meringue nests (I used 6)
-1 carton of heavy whipping cream
-20-30 strawberries and a few extra to garnish
Remember that you can also make the meringues if you please, with egg whites and sugar. If you are going to attempt this (and I find it extremely difficult) the only piece of advice that I can offer you is to bake the meringues at a very low heat – the point is to dry them, not to bake them! May the oven gods be with you.
You could add sugar to this recipe if you wish. However I found the meringues to be sweet enough for me and my taste buds.
Start by washing your strawberries and removing the tops. This is simple! Easy-peasy!
Next, chop them up into small cubes. This doesn’t have to be very precise. This is a “mess” after all.
Put the strawberries to one side and break up the meringues into chunks. I used a knife just to spilt them into more manageable pieces, but you can also place them in a plastic bag and use a rolling pin or wooden spoon to break them up.
Now, it’s time to whip the cream. Just make sure to keep a close eye on it, as we don’t want it to turn to butter.
Once that is done, the last step is to combine your ingredients together!
Just a note, I would recommend mixing the ingredients when you actually plan to serve this desert, as I find that the meringues actually melt a little, and they’re not as crunchy after.
Don’t forget to garnish with your sliced strawberries – and that’s it!
Now all that’s left is to invite some friends over!
Why not take up a new sport? – Cricket would be a very fitting idea!
Who knows, maybe Prince William and Eddie Redmayne will stop by to give you some pointers…
